Styles of Bindings
Bindings are narrow width cloth or vinyl materials used to cover exposed edges of convertible tops and other products. Robbins uses several factory original styles of cloth and vinyl bindings such as Single Fold, Double Fold, and Hand-Rolled Binding.
Some tops such as 3161, 3162, 3162 and 3164 Porsche Boxster tops have no binding and are finished by folding over the edge of the topping.
Single Fold and Double Fold bindings are the most widely used. Some convertible tops use both styles of binding, such as tops for 1990-2005 Mazda Miata that have Single Fold above the door glass and Double Fold around the rear window.
Binding Styles in our Part Numbers
Single and Double Fold Bindings
All tops made in domestic or imported Cloth toppings finished with Single Fold or Double Fold bindings will have a “C” after the core part number. The “C” signifies that the binding matches (or is extremely close to) the color and weave of the cloth is which the top is made. Examples are 2043C Top for 1999-03 Mercedes CLK, 2917C Top with Heated Glass Window for 1990-05 Mazda Miata, and 2059C Top to fit 2005-On Corvette.
Tops made in PVC Vinyl toppings with Single Fold or Double Fold bindings do not have a “C” after the core part number since the vinyl bindings always match the vinyl toppings in which the top is made. Examples are 2917 for 1990-2005 Miata, 6221 for 2005-On Mustang, and 2191 Top to fit 1977-80 MGB.
Hand-Rolled or Vinyl Binding
Tops made in Cloth toppings finished with cloth Hand-Rolled Binding will have an “R” at the end of the core item, such as 2042R for 1990-01 Mercedes SL.
Tops made in Cloth or Vinyl toppings finished with Hand-Rolled Vinyl binding will have an “RV” at the end of the core item number such as 2080RV or 2021RV to fit 1971-94 Alfa Romeo. An additional charge is required for Hand-Rolled Cloth or Vinyl Binding if this style of binding was not used in factory original tops.
For all part numbers in our Catalog with an “R” or “RV” there is NO extra charge since Hand-Rolled Binding was used in factory original tops for these convertibles.
